Curriculum Intent: Why is PSHE important at Lythe School?
At Lythe Church of England Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to nurture the whole child—academically, emotionally, and spiritually—so that every pupil can flourish. Using the My Happy Mind Plus scheme, we deliver a structured, whole-school approach to wellbeing that is rooted in neuroscience and focused on developing lifelong habits for positive mental health. The curriculum is built around five key concepts: Meet Your Brain (understanding how the brain works), Celebrate (building self-esteem), Appreciate (practising gratitude), Relate (developing positive relationships), and Engage (fostering focus and motivation). These threads run progressively throughout the school, giving children the knowledge, language, and strategies to manage their emotions, build resilience, and respond positively to challenges.
We believe PSHE is essential in helping pupils understand themselves and others, make safe and responsible choices, and develop strong, respectful relationships. Rooted in our Christian values, our curriculum promotes compassion, dignity, and respect, encouraging children to recognise their own worth and the value of others. Through My Happy Mind Plus, pupils are explicitly taught how to regulate their emotions, communicate effectively, and seek support when needed—key skills that underpin both wellbeing and safeguarding. By creating a shared language across the school and with families, we ensure that every child feels safe, supported, and empowered to thrive within our school community and beyond.
